Lesson TWO of Unit
Procedure
(70 minutes)
Introduction
(10 minutes)
Engage – Whole Group Instruction:
Pre-assessment/review: In order to make sure that all students understand the importance of the 13th amendment the teacher will have a whole-group discussion probed with some close ended and open ended questions. After each question, students will take 30 second to discuss the answer within their groups, and choose a speaker to give the answer if their group is called. The teacher will then use the popsicle sticks to call on one group per each questions.
Teacher will ask:
A- What does amendment mean? (pull out popsicle stick and ask the group that is picked).
B- What was the 13th Amendment? (pull out popsicle stick and ask the group that is picked).
C- How did American life change because of it? (pull out popsicle stick and ask the group that is picked).
D- Who do you think was affected most by the 13th Amendment and why? (pull out popsicle stick and ask the group that is picked).
Instructional Strategies
(20 minutes)
Students will be asked to take out their graphic organizer from the previous day (found here). They will be told to listen to the PowerPoint presentation and fill out their graphic organizer accordingly.
Teacher will show PowerPoint slides 9-13 (found here)
Students will be then asked to Think-Pair-Share with a student next to them to discuss their answers.
To ensure that all students understand what they are filling out in their graphic organizers, students will then be asked to use them to fill out an exit ticket that must be completed before working on their presentations. The students need to show the teacher the completed exit ticket, which the teacher will mark with a check before the student can proceed. By doing this, the teacher can see who may still need help. Those students who get more than two of the six questions wrong will be asked to wait in a group as the teacher additionally instructs them on the lessons.
This is the exit ticket:
1. What did the 14th Amendment do?
2. How does this affect the person you are representing in your presentation?
3. Would the person you are representing be happy or upset with the onset of this amendment? Explain your answer in a sentence or two.
4. Who do you think was affected most by this amendment and why?
5. What does due process mean?
6. How do laws in government affect our lives?
Summary/Closure
(40 minutes)
Students will be asked to work on their presentations in their groups as the teacher will play classical background music. After about 35 minutes, students will be asked to clean up while the teacher asks if there are any questions and ensure that all students understand their duties through a 5 finger response model (5 if they completely understand, 1 if they are completely lost). Teacher will have a “comments” drop box for students to write any questions or comments down that they wish not to share in front of the class that she can look at to further assist her with instructions.
Extension Activity
Due to the fact that the 14th Amendment gave citizenship to African Americans, students will be asked to pick an important African American citizen that has impacted the country in a positive way, and describe their contributions.
